Perry is she is Chicago native, born to Laurie Metcalf and Jeff Perry. She made her first appearances in television shows in the role of Jackie Harris, a character played by her mother in Roseanne, an ABC sitcom Roseanne. Because of their fear of stress, the parents didn't want to see performing before turning 18. Perry states that she did not want to perform in high school but decided to take up acting as a social activity at Northwestern University when she switched from Boston University. Perry started her acting career as an actress in New York after graduation, getting small role on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. However, the feeling of homelessness made Perry return to California to work as an actress in the theater. Perry starred with her mother in The Other Place at Broadway at the end of 2013. The show was directed by Eugene O'Neill. Pulitzer Prize winner Anna Christie as well as Kevin McKidd. This was presented at West Los Angeles' Odyssey Theatre Ensemble. Perry appeared in 9 episodes on ABC's drama The Family during 2016. In 2017, Perry was a part-time character in ABC's political thriller Scandal in which her father was the main character. The same year, she played a young version of Mary Cooper on Young Sheldon (a CBS spinoff The Big Bang Theory), portraying her mother in a younger version. She got the part through an open audition despite being connected to this character.
